The Schiller Society, located in Marbach is a private society that since its founding in 1859 administers and oversees the activities of Schiller’s birthplace, which [also] serves as a museum.

Last year the house adjacent to Schiller’s birthplace became available for sale and we took advantage of this once-in-a-century opportunity to purchase this house in order to expand the size and scope of the museum. Through this expansion a number of the needs of the present museum were able to be addressed and eliminated and new possibilities opened up, such as creating greater accessibility for the public, a second escape route, separate toilets and toilets for the disabled, as well as lockers, a cloakroom, lecture hall and a museum shop. Until now there were no lockers and no cloakroom in the museum, so if it rained visitors were forced to walk through the exhibits wearing or holding their wet coats. In addition, until now there has been only one toilet available and this is not accessible to all visitors, while presently the museum shop is comprised of only one display case and the lecture hall now available is located in the entrance area.

With the addition of the house adjacent to the present museum this will make it possible to work with school classes, hold lectures and make presentations. Moreover our aim is also to achieve the greatest possible accessibility for all visitors.

In Schiller's present birthplace there will then be much more space for an exhibition about his life and work and the house will also be preserved for future generations and the museum brought up to contemporary standards.

The renovation is being financed both by federal funds and by funds provided by endowments.

However, as a private society we have been required to take out a loan of € 380,000 for the purchase of the new building - we will want to repay this loan as quickly as possible. Therefore we ask for your support in repaying both the loan and the assessed interest.

We will recognize donations of 2,500 euros or more on a special plaque in the new entrance area.
